Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies happen at the most inconvenient times, and we at Leung Dental understand that.
When these emergencies arise, we make the time for you by staying late, shifting appointments and focusing on getting you out of pain!
What is a dental emergency?
You should be seen as soon as possible if you have a dental emergency!
Call our office, and we’ll do our very best to get you in that day to be seen and feeling better.
Let’s first review what is and what isn’t a dental emergency.
-
DENTAL TRAUMA
If you lose your tooth due to trauma, that is a dental emergency! If your permanent, adult tooth falls out of your mouth due to injury, Dr. Leung suggests to gently clean off the root, if still intact, and try to replace it in the socket in the appropriate orientation as soon as possible. If you can replant the tooth within 30 minutes, research shows a much higher percentage of keeping your original tooth!
If you're unable to replant the tooth, you need to store the tooth in saliva (your cheek), Hanks Balanced Storage Solution, or milk. You should not wait over two hours to be seen by a dental professional.
Dental trauma involving a broken tooth is a dental emergency. If you are experiencing pain, please come into our Hayward, California office ASAP.
-
DENTAL ABSCESS
If you see swelling or a dental abscess, that is a dental emergency. This should be treated immediately. If not treated properly, the dental swellings could spread and become a dangerous, life-threatening situation.
-
BLEEDING GUMS
If your gums are spontaneously bleeding, and don't stop bleeding, you have a dental emergency. It's unusual to see bleeding gums without an obvious cause, especially if you get regular cleanings and checkups. You may have an underlying health condition. Please visit your medical doctor immediately to check the status of your health, and let Dr. Leung at Leung Dental know as soon as possible.
-
CHIPPED TOOTH/BROKEN CUSP OF A MOLAR
Unless you’re in extreme pain, a broken cusp of a molar is not a dental emergency. For these cases, we will book you at our next available spot.
What to Expect
30 minutes or longer
We need to have a proper diagnosis and evaluation. We will first take an x-ray of the affected area, as well as a 15 to 30 minute examination. Once we are able to determine and diagnose the issue, we will determine the next plan of action so you can be out of pain.
